SWC
DARKROOM AND LAB ETIQUETTE

In order for us to maintain a clean, efficient, and safe lab environment where everyone is able to produce the best possible work, follow these rules.

  • No drinking, eating, or smoking is allowed in the classroom or lab rooms.
  • If something doesn't work, or you have forgotten how to use it, ASK!
  • Make sure you know which areas in the lab are wet and which are dry.
  • Never place a “Look Tray” in a dry area of the darkroom or anywhere in the classroom.
  • Do not put your hands into the chemicals. Use the appropriate tongs and keep the handles dry.
  • Use the tongs in each tray separately and do not carry them forward to other chemical trays.
  • If you do put the tongs into the wrong tray, wash them in water, dry them, and return them to the correct tray.
  • Do not use the tongs to poke at the prints in the tray, and be careful not to scrape the print surface, you will damage it.
  • Be accurate with the processing times.
  • Drain an 8x10 print for 10 seconds (11x14 for 15 sec.) and drop the prints into the next tray without touching the tongs into the next chemical, and then return the tongs to the proper tray.
  • Do not leave your prints in the fixer beyond the proper time.
  • Do not write on the back of your prints with ink prior to processing or drying. A soft Pencil or China Marker is OK.
  • Any prints left in the fixer or wash will be discarded at the end of the class.
  • When the final print wash cycle of 10 min. is started, do not add more prints until the washer is empty.
  • Carry washed prints to the dryer only in the white tray marked “Washed Prints Only” and “Dryer”.
  • Be sure you return everything in the printing room, film rooms, the supplies room, and the classroom exactly as you found them. All items and surfaces should be clean and dry. Push your chair under the table when you stand up.
  • Clean up after yourself and be out of the lab and classroom on time. There is another class coming in, and the lab staff cannot wait for you.
  • These points are so important that you will be quizzed on them.
